The Lauberhorn races in Wengen are among the oldest and most famous events on the Alpine Ski World Cup calendar. Every January, tens of thousands of spectators travel to the Bernese Oberland to watch the downhill on one of the longest courses in the world, with the Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch as a backdrop. Getting there is part of the experience, and planning it well makes the weekend far more enjoyable.
Wengen is car-free: how the journey works
Like Zermatt, Wengen cannot be reached by car. Road traffic ends in Lauterbrunnen, where the Wengernalp Railway climbs up to Wengen in about 15 minutes. A private transfer takes you door to door to Lauterbrunnen station, and your chauffeur helps you with your luggage to the train. On race days, extra trains run, but platforms are busy, so arriving without heavy bags to manage makes a real difference.

- From Geneva Airport: about 3 hours via Lausanne, Bern and Interlaken

Staying in Interlaken or Grindelwald
Many spectators stay in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen rather than in Wengen itself. A chauffeur can take you to Lauterbrunnen in the morning and collect you after the race, avoiding the busiest train connections and car parks. You can also combine the race with a day at Grindelwald First or a trip up to the Jungfraujoch.

Tips for race weekend
